Risk Assessments

What is a risk assessment in a school?

Risk assessments are important steps in protecting our staff, pupils and visitors and complying with the law. They help us to identify and focus on the most serious risks – the ones with the most potential to cause harm.

Commonly, straightforward measures can control risks. Implementing simple and effective measures to control risks can be invaluable to our school operating within tight budgets.

A risk assessment is simply a careful observation of our school in order to find what poses a risk to health and safety. It quickly allows us to decide whether our school is meeting its health and safety requirements.

The law does not expect our school to eliminate all risk. However, we are required to protect our school community as far as ‘reasonably practical’.
