The school has had a wonderful summer of athletic performance across a variety of formats and year groups. Overall around 100 students from Years 7-10 have represented the school across seven different competitions with several pupils going on to perform at county and national level as individuals.
In recent years, the track and field cup has come to the forefront of our ambitions with qualification for the regional finals the aim of our teams. The competition involves teams of 12 girls and 14 boys competing in two events each (one track and one field) with points awarded based on times and distances rather than results. This year, Norfolk combined with Cambridgeshire to have a dual counties competition held at Lynn Sport in Kings Lynn for our junior (Years 7 and 8) and inter (Years 9 and 10) teams. After some outstanding individual performances and several students acquitting themselves well in new events, our junior boys and inter girls qualified for the regional finals with the remaining two teams narrowly missing out.
A few weeks later the junior boys travelled to Watford to compete in the regional B final, the first time that a boys’ team from Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form has done so for thirty years. The standard was high but the boys performed well to finish tenth on the day. The inter-girls surpassed their efforts of the previous two years and qualified for the regional ‘A’ final, held this year in Chelmsford. This again represented a huge step towards the achievements of our school teams in the late 1980s. The team performed well against a host of teams that had been to the national finals previously with some outstanding individual performances from our eldest students. With the team containing eight students that are young enough to compete next year there is hope for more success in 2019.
In local district competition Thorpe St Andrew and Sixth Form was dominant once again having lost their overall titles last year. At the UEA with the junior (Years 8 and 9) and inter (Year 10) teams we won two individual team titles and the overall school prize by a landslide margin. At the Year 7 competition, which we host annually, our new cohort stepped up in their first competition to again win by a huge margin. From the district competition several of students qualified for the Norfolk schools’ finals event and from those performances Eleanor Brown and Grace Jermy were selected to represent Norfolk at the Anglian Schools’ Competition. Eleanor, who is one of the most outstanding athletes to represent the school in recent memory, has subsequently qualified for her third consecutive English schools trip in the coming weeks, this year in the triple jump event.
The culmination of schools’ athletics across the county in recent years has been the Norfolk school games event, held at the UEA in late June. To qualify for this day as individuals, students must win the sole place in their event across the partnership which consists of six high schools. For Years 7 and 8 this takes place through a qualifying competition and for Years 9 and 10 through qualifying times and standards. Of the sixty-seven students qualifying to represent ‘Norwich East’, fifty-three were from Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form, comfortably the most of any school in the county. Students performed fantastically well on the day producing seven gold medals, four silver and nine bronze to help our partnership finish fourth, a fantastic effort from what was virtually a solo high school team against strong joint school partnerships. The senior girls led the way with Amy Money producing two gold medals, Eleanor Brown taking silver and bronze with Alisha Youngs picking up two silver medals. Noah Grace-Whittaker, Grace Jermy, Ben Polley and Jack Coldham also produced outstanding gold medal performances and the Year 8 boys relay ensured we finished on a golden flourish.
We hope to see even more outstanding performances in 2019.
