Social Skills

What you as parents can do

  • Discuss the differences between rights and responsibilities and reinforce the idea that every right has at least one responsibility that earns the right, perhaps finding examples in family life to enable them to see the parallels with school life.
  • Encourage your child to find ways in which they can deal with things by themselves, not relying on others to help.  Start small when this is very difficult and rehearse ways they can cope (like making a phone call to find out the time of a bus or a train for example).  Do not do it for them.
  • Encourage your child to explore other opinions for dealing with difficult relationships, especially friendships.
