What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?

Why complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh programme encourages young people to take the initiative, developing personal and leadership skills. The Award programme offers a fantastic challenge, recognises skills and talents and leaves young people with a real sense of personal achievement.
What is the structure of the programme?
The Silver Award is made up of four sections: volunteering, skill, physical and the infamous expedition!

Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections: Two sections are completed weekly for 6 months and one section weekly for 3 months. Direct entry – If you didn’t do Bronze, you must undertake a further 6 months in either the Volunteering or the longer of the Physical or Skills sections.

Expedition section: Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form run one practice and one assessed expedition weekends in April – July to various locations within Norfolk and Suffolk.

Training: Students do not need to have any experience as they will receive training to get them ready for expeditions. This will cover first aid, meal planning, camp cooking, route planning, map navigation and expedition kit.

Costs: The total cost of registration, expeditions, training, certificate and badge is £170.
How does the programme progress my studies?
It is very well recognised and a very valuable addition to your Curriculum Vitae, university or job application form.
